There are allegations that the 17 South Africans currently stranded in Russia are actually members of MK, who were originally sent there for training with the intention of returning to South Africa as bodyguards for Jacob Zuma. Instead, these 17 men have found themselves caught up in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and have since requested assistance from the South African government to facilitate their return home. If the rumors hold any truth, even if they manage to come back, they could face jail time, as it is illegal for South African citizens to engage in warfare abroad without government permission. It’s somewhat ironic that if these men were indeed dispatched by Zuma, they’re now turning to Ramaphosa for help. Why can’t Zuma deploy an aircraft to bring them back?
